Broccolini is actually a hybrid! It is a cross between broccoli and Chinese broccoli, and has only been around since 1993. Broccolini is my all time favourite vegetable to cook. I am known as a broccoli lover, however, I think broccolini has a much better flavour and texture when roasted compared to broccoli. I’m sure there are many people who would argue with me on this fact, but here I go anyways. The best way to cook broccolini, without a doubt, is to roast it with olive oil and garlic.

Sure you can pan fry it; delicious. Steam it; awesome. Barbecue it; excellent choice. But roast it? Perfection.

Easy Tips & Tricks For Cooking Roasted Broccolini

  • Roast at 400°F:Broccoli is thin so it cooks quickly. This allows for faster cooking at higher temperatures.A harder vegetable, on the other hand, needs to be cooked for longer in the oven in order to become tender. Therefore, you need to cook it at slightly lower temperatures.
  • Do not skimp on the oil. These cute little broccolini leaves can easily burn.Make sure you use enough oil to cover the florets.
  • Give Space. The florets may touch slightly, but you should not crowd the pan. Otherwise, the broccolini might steam rather than roast and become soggy.Make sure you have broccolini in a single layer.
  • Cut the Sides Down.Flip the broccolini upside down so that any of the cut sides (e.g. if you have very thick broccolini, cut it in half through the stem), touch the pan to maximize caramelized area.
  • Final Seasoning.Black pepper and Kosher salt are essential for the best taste in broccolini.

How to roast Broccolini?

I like to roast my broccolini with green beans and carrots if I have them! If not, broccolini is beautiful all by itself. Smother it in olive oil, minced garlic and bake at 400° for 20 minutes. My favourite is when the little florets get all toasty. Yum.

Try roasting broccolini on the barbecue, it’s absolutely delicious, especially when paired with some BBQ chicken thighs or a salmon filet!
